How to Become a Qualified HGV Driver

The demand for qualified HGV drivers continues to grow, and figures suggest there is a shortage of skilled drivers taking demand to the highest it has been for over a decade. HGV drivers are the lifeblood of the haulage industry ensuring goods are collected and delivered across the country in a timely manner through various transportation networks.

If you enjoy being on the open road and are looking for a rewarding and challenging career, this article will explain the process of becoming a qualified HGV driver in the UK.

How to Qualify as an HGV Driver

To become a fully qualified HGV driver, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Be 18 years of age or over
  • Hold a valid UK car licence
  • Take your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) test

Medical Test

As part of your training, you must pass a medical exam to ensure you are healthy enough to be an HGV driver and to safely operate the vehicle. A medical test will assess whether you have any pre-existing medical conditions that could affect your ability to drive safely over long distances. This will usually involve examining your eyesight, heart condition, any brain issues and conditions such as diabetes and epilepsy.

Theory Test

As part of the qualification process, you will need to take a theory test. This is in the form of 100 multiple-choice questions which need to be answered at an official test centre. There are several resources available to help you prepare for these questions beforehand.

Practical Training

After successfully completing your theory test you will begin the practical part of your training. This will involve getting behind the wheel of an HGV vehicle with an experienced instructor who is DVSA certified.

Once you pass your practical test, you are legally allowed to drive an HGV. As part of the Driver CPC, you will be required to undertake a refresher course which is designed to check you are still fit to operate an HGV. To remain roadworthy a refresher course consists of 35 hours of periodic training every five years.
